(S)-2-(Benzyloxy)propanoic acid is a chiral compound that is derived from the esterification of benzyl alcohol with propanoic acid. The enolate anion of (S)-2-(Benzyloxy)propanoic acid can be generated by the reaction of this substance with sodium acetate in basic solution and quaternized using methyl iodide. This chemical has been shown to react selectively with lactates to form enolate esters and is used for the synthesis of stereoselective products. The anion of (S)-2-(Benzyloxy)propanoic acid can be synthesized from the corresponding bromide by reaction with potassium tert-butoxide in tetrahydrofuran at -78 degrees Celsius.
