1-Bromo-4-isopropylbenzene is an isomeric organic compound that has two different structures. It can be viewed as a four-carbon chain with a hydroxyl group at one end, or as a three-carbon chain with two phenyl groups at each end. The 1-bromo and 4-isopropylbenzenes are the most common isomers of this type of compound. 1-Bromo-4-isopropylbenzene is used in the synthesis of tetrachloroethane, which is used in the production of carbon tetrachloride, a solvent and an intermediate in other chemical syntheses. The reaction products depend on the conditions under which it was synthesized; for example, when bromine and carbon tetrachloride react, they form cyclopentadienyl chloride and chlorine gas.
