Tert-Butyl piperidine-1-carboxylate (TBPC) is an inhibitor of dopamine β-hydroxylase, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine. It has been shown to have strong inhibitory properties against trifluoroacetic acid, which is an acidic electrophile. TBPC also has kinetic and thermodynamic properties that are consistent with its role as a proton donor. This compound is synthesized by reacting piperidine with chloroform in the presence of a catalyst such as acetic acid, forming a chiral product. The enantiomeric purity can be controlled by using either racemic or optically pure reactants. Activation energies for the reactions were determined experimentally and are listed in the table below:
