It is metabolized by the liver to form bromochlorophenoxyacetic acid, which may have neurotoxic effects. The metabolism of 4-bromo-2,5-dichlorophenol also produces monocarboxylic acids and metabolic products. This agent has been shown to cause schistosomiasis in animals, and therefore may be toxic to humans as well. 4-Bromo-2,5-dichlorophenol is an intermediate in the synthesis of diazonium salts used as polymerization initiators for nylon production.
