The synthesis of 5-bromo-2-ethylpyrimidine can be achieved by quaternization of 2-(ethoxymethyl)pyrimidine with methyl bromide and sodium hydroxide solution. This reaction produces a mixture of mono-, di-, and triquaternary salts, which are isolated using techniques including 13C NMR spectroscopy.
