3-Bromo-5-phenylpyridine is a reactive, functional group that is an agonist for the acetylcholine receptor. It has been shown to inhibit the transport of acetylcholine into the nerve terminal, causing a decrease in both nicotinic and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. 3-Bromo-5-phenylpyridine is also an allosteric modulator of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which means that it changes the shape of these receptors to allow them to bind with more acetylcholine. 3-Bromo-5-phenylpyridine has been shown to have significant activity against neuropathic pain and may be useful as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease.
