DL-2,3-Butanediol is a chiral compound that can be produced from the reaction of two molecules of acetaldehyde. It is an important intermediate in chemical synthesis and can also be used as a precursor for biodegradable plastics. The DL-2,3-butanediol biosynthetic process is optimized by changing the substrate concentration, temperature, or pH. The wild-type strain of bacteria used in this study was E. coli BL21 (DE3). DL-2,3-butanediol has been shown to have physiological functions such as energy metabolism and hydroxyl group activity. This molecule also has intramolecular hydrogen bonding and intermolecular hydrogen bonding with other molecules of DL-2,3-butanediol.
