1,2-Benzenedimethanol is a chemical compound that has the molecular formula CH2=C(CH3)2. It is an ether with two hydroxyl groups, and has a chemical structure similar to that of ethanol. The oxidation catalyst for 1,2-benzenedimethanol is usually palladium on charcoal or platinum on carbon. When the reaction temperature is high enough, it will form the alkanoic acid. Reaction mechanism:
1) A particle of 1,2-benzenedimethanol reacts with an organic solution containing a carboxylate to form an acid complex and a phosphotungstic acid.
2) The hydroxyl group reacts with the carboxylate to form a fatty acid and water.
3) The hydroxyl group reacts with the carboxylate to form a fatty acid and water.
4) The hydrogen atom in the hydroxyl group reacts with the carboxylate
