The inhibition of this enzyme leads to an increase in the concentration of reactive aldehydes and reactive oxygen species, which can lead to cell death. 5-(Bromomethyl)-2-chloropyridine has been shown to be effective as an anti-inflammatory agent in animal models and has also been used as an immunosuppressant in organ transplantation.5-(Bromomethyl)-2-chloropyridine analogues have been synthesized and shown to be potent inhibitors of aldehyde oxidase, with much better pharmacokinetics than the parent molecule.
