The compound 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, 4-iodo is a cleavage product of the drug benzene dicarboxylic acid, 4-iodo. It can be used as a molecular imaging agent in positron emission tomography (PET) scans to measure the uptake of glucose by cells. The uptake of this compound is proportional to the rate of glycolysis and can be used as an indicator for hyperglycemia. This compound has also been shown to have antioxidant effects. It prevents oxidative damage by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals in vitro. Furthermore, it inhibits malonic acid formation and glycosidic bond cleavage caused by oxidative stress.
