3-Bromofuran-2,5-dione is a chemical compound with the molecular formula CHBrO. It is an upenamide that reversibly binds to the purinergic receptor P2X. 3-Bromofuran-2,5-dione has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against herpes simplex virus and anhydride activity against cyclohexane ring. 3-Bromofuran-2,5-dione forms a covalent bond with amide groups in proteins, which may be due to its protonated form. The hydroxyl group on the molecule also allows it to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules. 3-Bromofuran-2,5-dione has been found to act as a viscosity reducer in some cases due to its ability to react with hydroxyl groups on polymers such as cyclohexane rings in polymer chains or polyethylene glycols.
