3-tert-Butylbenzaldehyde is a chiral, thermally stable, and air stable molecule that can be used as a building block for the synthesis of other organic compounds. It is an electrophilic aromatic sulfoxide that can be synthesized by electrochemical method from 3-methylbenzene sulfonate and potassium tert-butoxide. The reaction proceeds in two steps: first, the 3-methylbenzenesulfonic acid (3MBSA) is converted to its corresponding sulfoxide by treatment with hydrochloric acid; second, the sulfoxide is converted to the desired product by treatment with sodium hydroxide. The yields are high in both steps and this process has been optimized to provide a high yield of 3-tert-butylbenzaldehyde.
