Bis(4-nitrophenyl)hydrogen phosphate is a coordination complex with a high rate constant. It has been shown to be catalytic in the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl phosphate, which is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides. The reaction mechanism for this process involves the formation of dinucleotide phosphate and pyrazinoic acid. This compound can be used as an oral prodrug for the treatment of cancer. Bis(4-nitrophenyl)hydrogen phosphate is also a potential experimental model for mitochondrial disorders that cause cellular death due to low levels of ATP production. These disorders are associated with decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, which can be restored by bis(4-nitrophenyl)hydrogen phosphate through its ability to increase ATP production and promote cell survival.
