1-(Bromomethyl)-4-ethylbenzene is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme nucleophile aminopeptidase. This drug has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of cancer cells and has dose-dependent anticancer efficacy. 1-(Bromomethyl)-4-ethylbenzene selectively inhibits cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting membrane transport, halting cellular metabolism, and inducing apoptosis. 1-(Bromomethyl)-4-ethylbenzene is not active against normal cells because they lack the metabolic pathway that is necessary for the uptake of this drug. This agent also inhibits glucose uptake and may be useful in treating diabetes.
