It is an effective flame retardant and can be used in the production of polyurethane foams. The main application of BEMPD is in the preparation of particulate matter for weather modification. This chemical has been shown to be an effective phase extraction agent for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs). Florisil column chromatography has been validated as a clean, economical, and sensitive method for the analysis of BEMPD residues. The sampler must be carefully selected to avoid interference with the analytical results.
