The products of this reaction include crotononitrile, hydrochloric acid, and adiponitrile. The optimal conditions for this reaction are between 50 degrees Celsius and 60 degrees Celsius at atmospheric pressure with a mole ratio of 1:1:1 (acetylene:hydrogen chloride:water). 2-Butenenitrile also reacts with trifluoroacetic acid to produce hydroxyl group (-OH) and trifluoroacetic acid.
