It binds to the ribosomes of cells, which are responsible for synthesizing proteins from amino acids and transferring them to other parts of the cell. The compound can inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the rRNA in the ribosome, preventing amino acids from joining together. 9-(Bromomethyl)anthracene has been shown to block the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between two fluorophores, and it has also been shown to have antiproliferative activity against human colon cancer cells.
