BAPTA-AM is a fluorescent probe that is used as a model system to study autophagy, which is the process of degradation of cellular components by lysosomes. It inhibits cyclase activity and has been shown to be an effective anticancer agent in various cell lines. BAPTA-AM can be used to prevent neuronal death in animal models by inhibiting the release of calcium from intracellular stores and by blocking apoptosis pathways. BAPTA-AM also binds to 5-HT2 receptors and can be used as a pharmacological agent in analytical methods for measuring intracellular calcium levels. BAPTA-AM has been shown to inhibit dextran sulfate uptake into cells, thereby disrupting the transport of glucose across the cell membrane.
