It has been shown to be the most potent carcinogen ever tested in animals, and is a known human carcinogen. Benzo[a]pyrene has been shown to cause cancer at various sites in the body. The carcinogenic potential of this compound may be due to its ability to inhibit mitochondrial membrane depolarization and inhibit DNA repair enzymes by covalent binding. This compound also causes an increase in free radical production and oxidative stress which can lead to cancer.
