N-Biotinylcaproylaminocaproic acid is a fluorescent probe that can be used for the detection of lipid membrane proteins. It was synthesized by attaching biotin to the carboxyl group of caprylic acid. This probe can be used in research on cytoplasmic and extracellular membrane proteins, as well as lipid metabolism, cell signaling, and protein trafficking. The assembly of lipid membrane proteins can be studied using this probe. The fluorescamine is excited at a wavelength of 530 nm, and emits light in the range of 590-620 nm. Caprylic acid has been shown to inhibit bacteriorhodopsin when it is incorporated into the lipid bilayer. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images are collected along an axis perpendicular to the surface of the material being examined, with a resolution down to 0.1 nm. AFM images have been obtained from oriented bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli
