Bis(2-aminoethyl) ether N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (BATE) is a chelating agent that binds to metal ions and prevents the formation of insoluble complexes that are excreted by the kidneys. It is used in biochemical research as a substitute for ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), which has been shown to have adverse effects on the kidney. BATE has been shown to be effective in treating patients with diabetic neuropathy, and it also binds to DNA and inhibits its synthesis. This drug also has polymerase chain activity and can inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to their DNA. The hydroxyl group on BATE may also play an important role in its metabolic functions.
