2-Bromo melatonin (2BMT) is a synthetic analog of melatonin that has been shown to be an effective contraceptive in animals. It binds to the MT2 receptor and inhibits the binding of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of sleep. 2BMT has also been found to have antineoplastic properties, inhibiting the growth of cells in culture. The effective dose for 2BMT was determined after experiments with Sprague-Dawley rats, where it was found that an oral dose of 0.5 milligrams per kilogram body weight inhibited the geniculate nucleus by 50%.
