Bromochloronitromethane (BCN) is a potent inducer of oxidative DNA damage. It has been used extensively for the treatment of wastewater, with applications in both analytical chemistry and wastewater treatment. BCN is a colorless liquid that has a ph profile of about 8.5 and an anhydrous sodium content of about 3%. BCN is soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform, acetone, ether, and alcohol. The most common analytical methods for detecting BCN are high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
Bromochloronitromethane is structurally similar to nitrosamines and can induce dna damage by reacting with DNA bases to form covalent adducts. The presence of BCN in the environment can be determined using HPLC or GC/MS methods.
