(S)-2-Benzyl-4-oxo-4-(cis-perhydroisoindol-2-yl)butyric acid calcium salt hydrate is a hypoglycemic drug that belongs to the class of sulfonylureas. It works by stimulating insulin secretion from the pancreas. The mitiglinide calcium is an orally active, long acting sulfonylurea with a duration of action of up to 24 hours. This drug has been shown to have a rapid onset and sustained effect on blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In addition, this drug is not metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and does not interfere with drugs such as warfarin or clopidogrel. Mitiglinide calcium can be used in combination with other oral hypoglycaemic agents such as metformin or insulin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
