Betamipron is a histone deacetylase inhibitor that is used to reduce cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in patients with cervical cancer. It has been shown to increase the uptake of cisplatin in renal tubule cells by inhibiting the activity of organic anion transporters. This drug also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for the prevention of kidney damage caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Betamipron is not absorbed from the gut, but it is taken up by the liver and excreted into bile. In this way, it can be detected in urine following oral administration. The major metabolite of betamipron is p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which inhibits the transcription factor NF-κB, thereby inhibiting inflammation and preventing tumor development in mice.
