Barium carbonate is a chemical compound that is made up of barium and carbonate. It has been used to prepare samples for analysis by surface techniques such as X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Barium carbonate is also used in the preparation of ceramics, as it reacts with sodium carbonate to form barium sodium carbonate. This compound is more chemically stable than barium oxide at high temperatures. The thermal expansion coefficient of barium carbonate is greater than that of zirconium oxide, which makes it a good choice for use in high-temperature applications where thermal expansion must be taken into account.
