Descripción

Diminazene is a medicine used to treat acute and chronic babesiosis. It is an oral prodrug that is metabolized to 2-benzyloxy-5-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-[1,3,2]dioxaborolan-2-yl)-pyridine (DMBP), its active form. Diminazene inhibits the synthesis of surface proteins in Babesia microti and other protozoa by targeting the polymerase chain reaction. It also has antimicrobial effects against bacteria and fungi. The drug is effective in chemotherapy for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, when given at high doses over a long period of time. Diminazene does not have any side effects on uninfected animals or humans with normal levels of lipoproteins.
