2-Bromo-2-methylpropanoyl bromide is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect ester linkages in biological systems. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Escherichia coli. 2-Bromo-2-methylpropanoyl bromide is also able to polymerize under nutrient solution conditions. This compound, when bound covalently to dopamine, forms polymers with biological properties that are sensitive to changes in pH and temperature. 2-Bromo-2-methylpropanoyl bromide has also been shown to be a radical, which can react with disulfide bonds in proteins or DNA.
