It inhibits the enzyme responsible for the cleavage of the gag and pol polyproteins in HIV, preventing the formation of new virus particles. 2-Bromo-3-hydroxybenzoic acid is orally bioavailable and can be used as a prodrug for other benzamides or urethanes with antiviral potency. This drug is a cyclic inhibitor that binds to the hydrophobic pocket on the surface of HIV protease and prevents it from functioning as an enzyme.
