It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in organic solvents but not in water. 1-Bromo-2-(methylsulfonyl)ethane has been used as a precursor for other organic compounds, such as imidazolium ionic liquids. The compound has been shown to react with nucleophiles in an elimination reaction to form a sulfone. 1-Bromo-2-(methylsulfonyl)ethane does not contain any impurities, which makes it suitable for use as a reagent. 1-Bromo-2-(methylsulfonyl)ethane can be synthesized from chloride and bromine via an ionic liquid synthesis reaction with methyl sulfone and an alkyl halide.
