The amide group can be cleaved by hydrolysis, yielding 2-bromobutyric acid and acetic acid. 2-Bromobutyric acid is used as a carbon source in the synthesis of fatty acids and in the amination reaction for the production of pharmaceuticals such as chloramphenicol acetyltransferase.
