n-Butyl methyl sulfide is an aliphatic hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C4H10S. It has a molecular weight of 84.1 g mol−1 and a density of 0.872 g cm−3. n-Butyl methyl sulfide is typically used as an oxidation catalyst in petroleum refining and as a reagent in organic synthesis. The molecule consists of one sulfur atom, two carbon atoms, and four hydrogen atoms. n-Butyl methyl sulfide has been shown to be active in desulfurization reactions involving the transfer of electrons between electron donors and electron acceptors, such as oxygen or nitrate ions.
