Bismuth dimethyldithiocarbamate is a divalent hydrocarbon that is used as an additive in industrial chemicals. It is soluble in organic solvents and insoluble in water. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals that are reactive with membranes and other biological molecules. Bismuth dimethyldithiocarbamate can also react with hydrogen peroxide, forming bismuth oxide and methemoglobin, which then reacts with the fatty acids in cell membranes. This reaction creates more membrane-bound methemoglobin, leading to an allergic response.
