2-Bromo-5-nitrothiophene is a molecule that has been synthesized. It has been shown to be a nucleophilic, with a chloride ion as the nucleophile and an electron pair from the nitro group as the electrophile. 2-Bromo-5-nitrothiophene is able to undergo a nucleophilic attack on an azide ion, which leads to formation of 2-bromo-5-(azidosulfonyl)thiophene. This reaction can also be done with other halides, such as bromide or iodide. The optical properties of this molecule are unknown.
