1-Boc-D-Pyroglutamic acid ethyl ester is an amido compound that is used as a chiral ligand in asymmetric synthesis. It is synthesized from piperidine and glutamic acid by sulfonylation, followed by reaction with ethyl bromoacetate. 1-Boc-D-Pyroglutamic acid ethyl ester is prepared on a large scale and can be obtained in high purity. It is soluble in water, has a pH of 2, and reacts readily with hydroxyl groups and borane to form the corresponding esters or ethers. The compound also reacts with acidic compounds such as sulfur dioxide to produce hydrogen sulfide gas.
