4-Butoxyphenol is a phenol that has been shown to have minimal toxicity at high concentrations. It has been used in the treatment of skin and eye infections, as well as for its antioxidant properties. 4-Butoxyphenol has been found to reduce the mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibit cellular respiration by interacting with the respiratory chain proteins, leading to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress. The reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential can be reversed by adding a reducing agent such as pramoxine or hydroxide solution. 4-Butoxyphenol also reacts with sodium hydroxide solution to produce hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen, which may be responsible for its antimicrobial activity against marine microorganisms.
