Descripción

Benzyl phenyl sulfone is a colorless liquid with a strong odor. It is used as a solvent for organic compounds and as an intermediate in the production of resins, dyes, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. Benzyl phenyl sulfone is also used as a starting material for the synthesis of other organic compounds and can be deprotonated with base to form benzyl phenoxy sulfoxide (BPSO). BPSO has been shown to efficiently react with hydroxide solution to produce chloride and sulfoxide. The reaction between benzyl phenyl sulfone and chlorosulfonic acid produces diphenyl sulfoxide, which can then be converted into a variety of useful chemicals such as sulfonic acids or sulfoxides.
