2-Bromo-5-cyanotoluene is a linker molecule that has been used in the synthesis of ellipticines, which are potent inhibitors of protein tyrosine phosphatases. This compound is synthesized from 2-bromoacetophenone, which is treated with sodium cyanide to produce the desired product. 2-Bromo-5-cyanotoluene has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on agrochemical activity and organic acids, such as citric acid, although its catalytic rate is low. This molecule can be used for cancer therapy by being incorporated into boronic esters.
