This chemical reacts with hydrogen peroxide to produce water, oxygen, and 2-bromo-5-chlorobenzoic acid. It can also be used in cyclisation reactions to synthesise heterocyclic compounds. The reaction mechanism for this process involves the formation of an unstable intermediate that spontaneously breaks down into two bromine atoms and one carbon atom. This process is catalyzed by metal ions such as copper, silver, and zinc. 2-Bromo-5-chlorobenzoic acid methyl ester has been used as an intermediate in the synthesis of homologues of ribonucleotide reductase.
