1-[(tert-Butyl)oxycarbonyl]-3-(4-chlorobenzyl)piperidine-3-carboxylic acid (BOC-NBP) is a deacetylase inhibitor that belongs to the group of biradical compounds. It has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in animal models of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. BOC-NBP also blocks phosphodiesterases, which are enzymes that break down cAMP and cGMP, thus inhibiting neurotransmitter release. This drug has been found to be effective at limiting memory loss in mice with Alzheimer's disease and improved cognition in rats with experimental stroke. BOC-NBP also inhibits histone deacetylase activity, which may contribute to its neuroprotective effects.
