Bis(4-methylpentyl)phthalate (BMPP) is a plasticizer that is used in many products such as cosmetics, paints and adhesives. BMPP has the chemical formula CH(COCH). It is a cross-linker that acts to increase the viscosity of polymers. The dry weight of BMPP is around 100g/mol. The molecular weight of this compound is around 216.04g/mol. Electrospray ionization quadrupole mass spectrometry (ESI-QMS) was used to analyze the sample. To prepare a sample for analysis, microcapsules were created by dissolving BMPP in chloroform and sonicating it with water and then drying it out. Molecular modeling was used to study the mechanism of BMPP degradation on surfaces through thermolysis or oxidation.
