Butylamine is a chemical with the formula CH3CH2CH2NH2. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water, methanol, and ethanol but not in ether or chloroform. It is produced on a large scale as a precursor to the plasticizer butyl rubber. The compound exists as either of two geometric isomers: "cis"-butylamine and "trans"-butylamine. Butylamine can be used as an optical sensor for metal carbonyls and metal hydroxides by measuring light absorption at 230 nm. Butylamine has been shown to have a high affinity for Langmuir-type adsorption of gases where it forms monolayers on gas-water interfaces. This property makes butylamine useful in separating volatile organic compounds from water samples via extraction with methanol, which dissolves the organic compounds while the water stays behind.
