1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Iodide belongs to a group of ionic liquids. The phase transition temperature is below -18°C and it has freezing point depression properties. It is soluble with water, alcohols, and ethers. This compound has a viscosity that is greater than that of water at room temperature but lower than the viscosity of most organic solvents. In addition, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Iodide has been shown to react with carbonyl groups and hydrogen bonds on the surface of metals; this interaction can be used for surface methodology for metal surfaces.
