N,N'-Bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine is a naphthalene derivative that has been synthesized as an optical sensor for nitrite ions. It has a transition from a blue to red color when reacted with nitrite ions. The molecular weight of this compound is 526.65 g/mol and the density at room temperature is 1.027 g/cm3. This material exhibits cationic polymerization properties and can be used as a catalyst for the production of epoxides or x-ray crystal structures in the presence of transition metal salts. It also displays redox potentials that are suitable for use as an electrode material in light emission devices, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs). N,N'-Bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine can also be used to study intermolecular hydrogen bonds and is able to form hydrogen
