This molecule has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth in vitro, even against resistant strains. 2,2'-Bi(1,8-naphthyridine) has been shown to inhibit the transport properties of nitrogenous compounds in bacteria by binding to the enzyme which catalyzes this process. The crystal structure of 2,2'-bi(1,8-naphthyridine) was found to be a section of the pyridinium ion with an acrylonitrile ligand.
