It is used in the synthesis of formylbenzenesulfonates and other functional groups. 1,3-Benzodithiolylium tetrafluoroborate has been shown to react with methylene groups and active methylenes to produce compounds with formyl groups. This reaction is catalyzed by organocatalysts. 1,3-Benzodithiolylium tetrafluoroborate can also be used in the preparation of amines and sulfoxides by reacting with amines or thiols in a reaction solution.
