Trans-1,2-Bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethylene is a chiral sulfoxide that is used for the synthesis of sulfoxides. It has been shown to be an organocatalyst for reductive elimination and alkenylation reactions. Trans-1,2-Bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethylene is stable under acidic conditions and catalyzes the reaction of persulfate with various compounds to produce sulfates. It can also be used as a chiral synthon in organic synthesis. Trans-1,2-Bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethylene reacts with an aldehyde or ketone in the presence of base to form a sulfoxide. This reaction proceeds by a nucleophilic addition followed by reductive elimination. The x-ray structures and molecular modelling data obtained from this compound are consistent with the proposed mechanism.
