Bis(tetrabutylammonium) Tetracyanodiphenoquinodimethanide is a switchable molecule that can be switched between two states by the addition of a hydrochloric acid. It has been shown to absorb radiation in the ultraviolet region, which is then converted into an electron and anion radical. The electron and anion radicals react with the silicon atoms to form silicon radicals. This reaction can be reversed by adding hydrochloric acid, which removes the hydrochloric acid. The molecule has been synthesized using organic chemists and is made up of a carbon atom, four hydrogen atoms, two chlorine atoms, one bromine atom, and one tetrabutylammonium ion.
