2-Bromo-1,4-benzoquinone is a potent antimicrobial agent that belongs to the class of hydroxyl group containing compounds. It has been shown to be effective against bacteria and fungi. 2-Bromo-1,4-benzoquinone inhibits the growth of bacteria by targeting their enzymes and altering their cellular processes. The drug binds to the cytosolic Ca2+ ionophore, inhibiting ATP synthesis and decreasing levels of nucleotides in bacterial cells. 2-Bromo-1,4-benzoquinone also inhibits glutamate pyruvate transaminase, an enzyme that is important for energy production in bacterial cells. This drug also has a toxic effect on human erythrocytes (red blood cells).
The hydroxyl group present in this compound allows it to react with hydrogen fluoride or other halogens to form brominated derivatives. These derivatives are highly reactive and can act as an oxidizing
