N,N'-Bis(4-chlorophenyl)-N,N'-diphenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (PPD) is a polymeric material that is used as an electrode in electrochemical systems. PPD can be synthesized by the co-polymerization of N,N'-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-N,N'-diphenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine with polyvinyl chloride or polyaniline. The polymerization process can be carried out using lithium as a catalyst. This process usually involves extrusion and imidazole treatment to remove water and other impurities from the polymer. PPD has been studied extensively for its ability to cycle between oxidation and reduction with respect to the redox potential of lithium during electrolysis.
